We prefer to set off the term Inc. with commas:
Acme, Inc.
However, many corporations do not use this style. Treat corporate names in accordance with each corporation’s preferences.
The following are the full names and abbreviated names of the university and its seven campuses (plus the regional centers at Columbus and Fort Wayne) in the order in which they are usually listed. Note that at is not a part of any campus name (e.g., it’s Indiana University Kokomo not Indiana University at Kokomo).

Indiana University Bloomington, IU Bloomington (no dash or hyphen; not an official campus name but may be necessary for clarity)

Indiana University Indianapolis
- Formal name: Always refer to the campus as Indiana University Indianapolis or IU Indianapolis on first reference, without exception.
- Informal use: Use IU Indy informally after the first reference in informal contexts. Never use an acronym to refer to IU Indianapolis, “IU Indy” is the shortest acceptable version. Acceptable examples of informal use:
- IU Indy is a premier urban research university committed to improving Indianapolis and beyond.
- Welcome to Indy. Home to the state’s capital, fortune 500 companies, professional sports teams, thousands of hard working hoosiers, and IU’s Indianapolis campus.
- Campus location: Indianapolis can be used to reference the campus’ location in place of the full campus name. For schools present on multiple IU campuses, Indianapolis can be used to identify campus affiliation (e.g. Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering in Indianapolis).
- Running text references: When referring to the campus in running text, the first reference should always be “Indiana University Indianapolis.” After the first reference, it is acceptable to use “IU Indianapolis” or “IU Indy.” When referring to schools, departments, units, or programs in running text you may add “at IU Indianapolis” or “in Indianapolis.”
- Centers and Institutes:
- If located on the Indianapolis campus, centers and institutes should refer to themselves as “XYZ Center at IU Indianapolis.”
- For example: Institute of Integrative AI at IU Indianapolis, the Center for Africana Studies and Culture at IU Indianapolis, or the Center for Health Policy at IU Indianapolis.
- Centers or Institutes managed, administered, or governed by IU Indianapolis should refer to themselves as “IU Indianapolis XYZ Institute.”
- For example: IU Indianapolis Arts and Humanities Institute, IU Indianapolis Institute for Engaged Learning or the IU Indianapolis Sports Innovation Institute.
- If located on the Indianapolis campus, centers and institutes should refer to themselves as “XYZ Center at IU Indianapolis.”
Indigenous (capitalized) is widely accepted as a general term referring to the original inhabitants of a place. When possible, use the specific self-referential name of a particular community or nation, such as Delaware or Potawatomi, rather than the broader terms “Native American” or “Indigenous.”
Capitalize “Indigenous” when referring to people or groups as a proper noun, such as “Indigenous ” but use lowercase “indigenous” when it is used as a common adjective, like “indigenous plant life.”
The phrase international students is preferable to foreign students.
This term is not capitalized. It should not be used interchangeably with World Wide Web.
